Late Chief Liberian Gillian Thompson was remembered as a front runner in the promotion of literacy in Guyana as she was laid to rest on Saturday.

Her funeral service held at the Trinity Methodist Church was attended by hundreds.

The audience heard heart rendering tributes from Assistant Chief Education Officer Donna Chapman, literary enthusiast Petamber Persaud and well known journalist Francis Quamina Farrier.

Thomson, 44, was described as a warm and loving person whose joy and passion was to see children read, and to help them in their studies.

This, the speakers said, she did as though she was the mother of the children who visited the National Library.

Thompson of North Ruimveldt met her demise in a gruesome manner on Christmas Eve Day after a car slammed into a bus belonging to National Library at the corners of North Road and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.

Thompson, who was in the front passenger’s seat of the minibus suffered several serious injuries and died almost immediately.

The impact sent the woman flying through the windscreen of the minibus. She then got stuck between the vehicle and the concrete bridge.

The driver of the car Odeda Underwood was subsequently charged for causing death by dangerous driving, among other charges.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has expressed grave concern at the number of accidents taking place around the country and has announced measures to curb reckless and drunk driving.
